Adjacent left hand side hall of current periodical section.
All reference sources are housed in this section . It includes
encyclopedia, dictionaries, directories, bibliographies, handbooks
etc. They are identified by 'R' mark on the book and are not allowed
for borrowing or take it elsewhere except for photocopying in the
library only.
Guidelines:
Background information, overviews of a topic and quick facts
are found in reference source.
Encyclopaedia - General information, subject
information (basic)
Dictionaries - Difference in meaning, quotation
Directories - Addresses of institutions and current
information
Almanacs - Statistics, facts figure

Some of the important reference work available in the library
are listed below:
1. Encyclopaedia Britannica
Volume 1 to 30 (1984)
It consist of three distinct parts
(1) Pro-paedia - outline of knowledge (single volume)
(2) Micro-paedia - information on all important topic in nut
shell (10 volumes)
(3) Macro-paedia - main body of the work (19 volumes)
Latest CD-ROM edition of this work is available, and the users
can ask for access and search in the Library.
2. Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics (Hastings)
13 volumes (1980)
The
encyclopaedia embrace the whole range of theology and philosophy,
mythology, folklore biology, psychology, Economics and Sociology.
3. Encyclopaedia of Religion
16 volumes( New York), Macmillan 1987
4. Dictionary of History of Ideas
4 volumes (New York ) Charles Scribner's 1973
This work is valuable for it is the only modern reference work
to provide and inter-disciplinary, understanding of the dynamics of
human thoughts.
5. Encyclopaedia of Social Sciences (Seligman)
15 volumes (New York), Macmillan 1965
Part of the 15th volume is an Index.
6. International Encyclopaedia of Social Sciences
18 volumes (New York), Macmillan 1968
(Volume 17 is of index and volume 18 is a biographical
supplement published in 1979)
This
encyclopaedia is a comprehensive summary of the state of knowledge
in the Social Sciences. 19th volume published recently is
being acquired by Goa University Library.
7. Encyclopaedia of Philosophy
8 volumes (New York), Macmillan 1967
This
encyclopaedia treats eastern and western Philosophy. It deals with
ancient medieval and modern philosophy and it discusses the theories
of mathematicians, physicist, biologists, sociologists,
psychologists, moral reformers and religious thinkers, these have
had an impact on philosophy.
8. McGraw - Hill Encyclopaedia of Science and Technology
An
international reference work is in 15 volumes including and index. (Phil.McGraw-Hill,
1977) This encyclopaedia presents pertinent information in every
area of modern science and technology.
Latest
CD-ROM edition of this work is available, and the users can ask for
access and search in the Library.
9. Encyclopaedia of Physical Science and Technology
An
encyclopaedia reference complete in 15 volumes. (New York Academic
Press, 1987). Each article in this volume is designed to present the
subject in a standard format. A table of contents precedes each
article and defining paragraph appears at the beginning of each
article thereby enabling the readers to decide to continue or not
reading, the whole article.
10. McGraw-Hill Encyclopaedia of World Biographies
An
international reference in 12 volumes including index (New York,
McGraw-Hill, 1973) it gives biographical sketches with pictures of
5000 eminent persons from ancient times to the present.
11. Dictionary of National Biographies (Indian)
4
volumes with supplements gives biographical sketches of about 2000
Indians.
These are some of the important reference works out of 1500
volumes in this section. All these would reveal a wealth of useful
information and all these are at your disposal under rules governing
the library.
